When I think of Tom and Jerry, thoughts of my childhood immediately flood back. I will never forget sitting in my family room watching show after show with my brother. The two of them were so entertaining with their mischievous ways and hilarious fights. Each episode is filled with the two of them battling it out as Tom tries to defeat Jerry, and the little mouse somehow always manages to escape him. Some of the funniest scenes from the series is when Tom tries to destroy Jerry; however, in the process of trying to catch the mouse Tom brings defeat upon himself. The scenes are countless of when this occurs. In one episode, Tom is chasing Jerry around the kitchen trying to catch him, and as a result, a lady slams the broom into Tom’s head to get him to stop and knocks him out allowing Jerry to escape. Another instance when this occurs in the television series is when Tom tries to kill Jerry with an ax and he goes to swing but misses Jerry and ends up chopping down the whole house. The roof falls onto Tom and Jerry is able to escape yet again. These sort of instances are found throughout the entirety of the show. They are so comical because try as he might, Tom is never able to catch Jerry despite the fact that Jerry is just a small little mouse and Tom is a giant cat. It is also very ironic that Tom is always the one that ends up getting hurt even though he is trying to hurt Jerry. These kinds of scenes are filled with the incongruity theory. No one would ever expect a small mouse to be able to escape a giant cat. It is also surprising, but hilarious, of all the problems Tom brings upon himself.

  1. It's definitely true that the central premise is one of incongruity here and that seems to be a big part of what makes it so effective. I wonder if just watching the cat beat up on the mouse would be nearly as funny.
