Deadpool is such a classic. That movie is by far one of the funniest films I have ever watched, and Ryan Reynolds’ portrayal of the main character is epic. Every scene is filled with his dry, sarcastic comments that just keep everyone laughing until their stomach hurts. Each theory of humor can be seen throughout the entirety of the movie, but there is one scene in particular that I want to focus on. In this scene Deadpool is trying to fight off Colossus, a huge metal guy that is extremely strong. Every time Deadpool goes to punch him, his hand breaks so he then resorts to kicking him. Which of course breaks his foot. Colossus is undefeatable and ends up putting Deadpool in handcuffs. Deadpool decides to cut his hand off to get out of the handcuffs since he can heal very quickly, and Colossus is left with a sawed-off hand that is flicking him off. This scene is very funny because Deadpool continues to try and defeat Colossus even though he is literally destroying himself in the process, meanwhile Colossus is not even flinching. The superiority theory can be seen here because everyone in their right mind would give up fighting someone like Colossus, especially after they broke their handhowever, Deadpool continues to try and defeat him making the scene very humorous. Then, the scene ends with Deadpool sawing his hand off and leaving the giant with a hand flicking him off. The incongruity theory is at play here because no one would ever expect his hand to be left like that in such an ironic and in-your-face kind of way. The benign violation can also be seen because it is inappropriate enough to make you laugh, but not too inappropriate to cause the viewer to be horrified by it. Deadpool is filled with many other scenes including ones that Katie mentioned, and this was a great choice to write about.

  1. This is also funny since it's a clever twist on the scene in Monty Python's Holy Grail where a character refuses to give up even as he's losing limb after limb. It is pretty horrifying though, don't you think? You need the commentary to distance yourself from it it seems to me.
