Blogpost Response #4

Ok I admit, I have never in my life have heard of the movie “The Big Lebowski” before despite the fact that it has played such a significant role in society. However, after reading Zach’s post I am very intrigued and interested to watch it. I think that this film was so impactful on society because of the attitude of the main character, Jeffery. Because he lives life in more of a relaxed, lackadaisical kind of way, he becomes a character that everyone not only relates to, but also strives to be like. People get so easily worked up and stressed out about everything that life throws at them. Its everyone’s natural instinct to try and think so far ahead and plan out every scenario before it occurs, but that is just not reality. No matter how prepared someone tries to be, things change; life is unpredictable, so it is just an unreachable goal to try and plan everything out. Instead, people should try and follow Jeffery’s attitude on life and “take it easy”. I know it is hard for people, myself included, to not worry about what is to come, but I feel like if you take life day by day, you will be happier because you will live in the moment more.

Jeffery is also a very humorous character and many of the theories can be seen throughout the film through his behavior. With his unpredictable behavior, you can see the incongruity theory. One scene in particular that you can see this theory is the car crash scene.  Jeffery is riding down the road listening to music as he smokes a cigarette. He ends up dropping the cigarette in his lap and dumps his drink on his pants to try and extinguish it. This causes him to crash and wreck his car. This scene is found to be so funny because it is very unexpected and out of nowhere. This type of behavior can be seen throughout the entirety of the movie. “The Big Lebowski” is a hilarious film, and one that I hope one day I will be able to watch more than a couple scenes of. But despite the fact that I have only seen a few clips, I was still able to notice why it had such an impact on society.

  1. I liked how you talked about that individuals need to be more relaxed because I know for myself I definitely try to plan everything out, and I should really use more of Jeffery's outlook on life. I also think thats why the movie is so well reviewed because people aspire to be more relaxed.
