The Good Place is another series that I have never seen, let alone heard of, which kind of surprises me because there are some very well-known actress in the comedy show. After watching a few famous clips from the show, I can very clearly see why Abi chose to write about The Good Place. It has very funny scenes filled with the incongruous and relief theory, as well as the superiority theory. One scene in particular that I would like to point out that is prevalent with the theories is a scene with Eleanor, the ring leader of the other humans. In this scene she is talking to Jason Mendoza, one of main characters in the series. In the clip, Jason asks if Eleanor would like to see his bud hole; however, because he has an accent, it sounds like he is asking her if she wants to see his butthole. He continues to explain that that it is very messy furthering her thinking that he is actually talking about his butthole. The scene continues, and it shows how Jason brings her to a room and explains how this is where all of his buds hang out, so she is able to see what he truly meant. This scene is very comical because you can see the incongruity theory play out. No one would ever expect someone to ask a question like that, and ask it so casually, so it is so funny because it came out of nowhere. It is also funny because a lot of the times a viewer is not really brought into the comedy scene, and instead watched it play out, but with this scene the viewer also only hears butthole and goes through the same realization that Elanor goes through when he opens his door up to his messy bud hole making the scene that much funnier. This series was a great show to write about because it is very comical and filled with the theories we have discussed in class.
I also had never seen the show before but liked how you brought in another example from the show to tie everything together.
ReplyDeleteAlso, the idea of a bud hole is just funny in general as a weird substitute phrase for man cave (I think?) The nonchalant quality with which all sorts of absurd things happen is really part of the fun.
