When I think of comedy, a musical is not what comes to mind if I am being completely honest; however, as I watched the two videos from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, I could not keep myself from laughing. The songs themselves are very well done with their clever lyrics, and the characters also do a very good job of acting out the scenes while singing along. In the first song, “Face Your Fears”, it begins with the lead singer discussing how she used to be so scared, but she eventually learned to never back down. It starts as being very relatable because anyone has gone through an experience where they want to run and hide instead of facing their problem; however, it takes a very unexpected turn as she continues on the song. She begins to say ridiculous comments like, stay in a burning building or attempt to fly out of a window, and she eventually brings in children to be her back-up singers. As you continue to watch the scene, it becomes more and more comical as she gives her ludicrous advice. This is a great example of the incongruity theory because in the beginning of the scene the viewer was expecting the singer to give serious and practical advice; however, the tone changes out of the blue and she begins to say things that make absolutely no sense which adds a lot of humor to the song. The other character, Rebecca, added a lot of humor to the scene because of her reasonable comments questioning what the singer was saying. The kids, as well, were very comical and added another touch that was very unexpected, which plays into the incongruity theory.

The second song “Settle for Me” was also very funny because the lead singer is being very blunt with his statements and clearly addresses how he is Rebecca’s second choice, but she should settle for him anyways. This is another example of the incongruity theory because you would never expect a love song to be addressed the way he did and to be so straightforward about how she does not like him. Both songs are very comical and are very well done; I really enjoyed watching them and found them to be hilarious!

  1. Do you think musicals promote this "constant" gut busting laughter in a way other forms do not?
