As Chris stated, The Office is a prime example of the superiority and incongruity theories; therefore, it is found to be used in many people’s blogposts, myself included. With its very distinguished characters and hilarious plots, one can see many examples of how these theories are represented. Chris does a great job of deciphering through the scenes, and choosing ones that really showcase how certain characters, like Michael, Dwight and Jim, use the superiority theory, as well as instances where one can see the incongruity theory. He exemplifies how these theories can be seen in The Office through the episode, "Stress Relief". That episode in particular was also used in my earlier blogpost, which I found interesting because we both recognized the theories in that specific scene. I think that shows how strong The Office uses those theories of humor because we both noticed it at separate times. He describes the episode by explaining how Dwight started an intentional fire to try and teach everyone safety; however, it goes terribly wrong. The office is thrown into hysteria as everyone is trying to save themselves from the fire, and it eventually results in Stanley suffering from a heart attack. He does a great job of explaining how the episode is a prime example of incongruity because so many unexpected things were happening that surprised the viewer causing them to laugh. Chris continues to explain how the superiority theory can be directly seen through Michael and Jim’s actions throughout the entire show. Michael picks on Toby just to feel superior, and Jim constantly messes with Dwight, causing people to laugh because a lot of misfortunes are brought upon Dwight.

I thought he did a very good job of explaining how both theories can be seen throughout the behavior of all the characters. He made many points that I never thought of even though I chose the same show to explain how the theories are represented. I thought his introduction was very well done too because it captured the reader’s attention. Overall his blogpost was well done.

  1. I wonder why the show is called stress relief--what exactly does this tell us about how the show might be conceived? Is it asking us to look at incongruity theory?
